Mise-en-scene action film - Sherlock Holmes

The use of mise-en-scene in this action film is effective as it instigates the two main characters in this poster, and the positioning in this poster shows the rank at which each character stands. The different uses of mise-en-scene shows how this poster is effective in presenting.
The first part that stands out the most is the costumes. The costumes are effective as they can be easily seen and stand out the most as they take up most of the camera space. The clothes represent that they are from old fashioned times, as the patterned fabric is quite old time. This lets the audiance know that this film isnt in the time today, either that or the film is about more posh people. The use of the top hat on one of the characters shows the poshness of this character compared to Sherlock Holmes who has messy hair. The audiance already know that the man with the messy hair is sherlock holmes as the positioning of him is in the front, making him the first character that the audiance sees.
The use of props in the background (including a woman, dog, and alcohol bottle) shows that these are important aspects of the film. It makes the audiance want to know why these are important for the film, therefore convincing them to go see it.

The use of editing is also used in this poster, this is how the poster becomes blue. The use of this blue background makes it more brighter to the other films that are on show, it also brings across that this film isnt as scary as a horror, it brings across a light hearted mood. This is an idea I could consider using for my opening two minutes, it could show the titles at the top.
The other use of editing is the blurring of the objects or people in the background, which is good as it merges in with the blue in the background. The writing and the old time setting makes this more in the idea that this is a mystery film, which the audiance bring across.

I found this helpful because it helps me decide which path to go, and this mixed with ashes to ashes and House have made me decide that I am going to choose action, as I can make something similar to the gorillaz clip for their music video. In order to make this successful I need to analyse sound and editing, this will enable me to perfect my clip.

Mise-en-scene example - Horror

The uninvited is a good example of a horror film which uses mise-en-scene to thier advantage. This poster is the advertisement of the film, and the use of mise-en-scene was used with the use of props for the window. The window is a good prop to use as it can be made to look old by scuffing the edges, but it is used mainly to look realistic with the use of fog all over the top. This is a representation of the coldness of the character that is behind the window, and is blurred within the fog.
The use of mise-en-scene is also used in the background that you can see behind the indow, whch is of a forest. This is determined by the clustered trees that are crouded behind the character at the front. This is a cliche in horror films as it is a setting that a lot of horror films use, as a forest is a place that has a creepy atmosphere when dark and is a vulnerable place to be, as it is unrecognisable to you.
The use of lighting is used to silhouette the character, this makes her the main focus of attraction. It also blocks out any view of anything else behind them and therefore forcing the viewer to look at the character. This is effective in asserting the audiance that this is a horror film.
The last use of mise-en-scene that is used in order to make it more bright and to make it stand out is the use of costume. The use of costume isn't fully focused on this poster but it is helpful in finishing off the full image of the atmosphere that it is trying to create. The T-shirt is dirty and torn, which can represent a struggle that it took for the character to come this way.

The plot works well with this clip as the use of the window prop instigates the fact that the girl behind the window is uninvited, which is the title of the film. The use of mise-en-scene tells the audiance that therefore they want to find the answer behind it. What is going to happen?
This has helped me understand how to use the different types of mise-en-scene in ways to help the audiance interpret what they are meant to be feeling before words are even spoke, this attracts them more accuratly. This will help me when creating my own opening two minutes for my genre.

Mise-en-Scene - Settings

Empty Countryside

This is an example of Mise-en-scene, and is used for genres such as horror or romance. Horror, is when it is used as an example because it is a vulnerable place to be, because 'no one can hear you scream'. This works better when it is dark, as it makes the audiance and the characters look uncomfortable in the setting, as the surroundings are not familiar.
In romance, it has the opposite effect. This is helped by music that would be played in the background. For romance, this can also be in the dark, but the lighting, which is also mise-en-scene, would be of a different opacity than of a horror. The empty setting between two people can make this more romantic, as they are alone and it can attract the audiance in their own idea of how this could be set.

Empty Desert

For the desert scene, this works for action and horror. In horror, this has the same effects as the empty rural setting, as it is empty and a vulnerable place to be. Again, this is because of the emptyness of the place and the unfamiliarity of the setting around them.
This works for an action scene however as it is an area that be used for a car chase scene, where if there is a crash it would be the end of the situation, there is nothing to crash into. This scene is similar to the one scene in the Gorillaz video where it is done in a desert, and the exitement of the scene makes the audiance grabbed in. This is why I want to do something similar to my opening two minutes, not in the empty desert as it is unreachable, but in a quiet space. That is why I chose the school at night.

School corridor at night.

This school hallway at night works best as it is a mix of two genres that have been present in my research and planning, action and horror. A classroom corridor in the daytime is different as it uses characters to fill the corridors with students and therefore the preence of other people makes it less scary. No people in the corridors at night time however is more scary, as it makes the atmosphere change. Why are they there?
The cliche however in action is that you have the chase scene in the corridors, this is where mise-en-scene works best as school corridors work well with long stretches for charaters to run in.
For this setting, this corridor could work best as it means I can link both of the seperate cliches, a chase scene can be included in order to run from a horror cliche, an objectivity of fear. For my clip I am hoping to further make mine more exiting and constantly moving, instead of slow and dreary. I want to explore the openess of the corridors I have already seen and taken pictures of, therefore expressing a good opening to a film.

I think understanding the mise-en-scene of settings will help me in understanding each individual areas and why they are effective, it also means I can use just the two characters. To fuurther look at mise-en-scene I can explore lighting and costume, which also helps in the idea of making the clip effective.

Idea

I had an idea with the pictures of the clips I had included, this is using editing. I thought of jumping one clip to another using editing, the idea I had in mind was to jump each clip to another scenery in the background, it would also flow with the linking to one area to another. An example of this is the snatch episode where they link from one area to another, this is in the intros.
I thought of including this because it is what is used in music videos as they have a limited amount of time, which I have when it comes to my opening two minutes. The Gorillaz video I analysed has this effect, it takes you to one scenery and one piece of action to another with slick movements done so smoothly by editing.

This is why I would like to use this idea, as it what is used in the openings of clips and it would be relevant from my research so far for my creating. I like this idea as it is something that shows that I have used used different techniques but also shows I have thought through every movement in my clip.

Camera Shots I'm Including

Reflection Shot

This shot is useful in film making as it allows the audiance to see the person behind them. In this photo, you can see molly standing behind alice, whilst you see the back of Alice's head and her face in this shot. Being placed in the right position is how this clip works properly, and it makes it effective for the audaince when watching, and they start to belive that they are looking throught that mirror themselves. Using my actors Alice and Molly in this photo allows me to experiment with who works best for what part, and molly looks more serious in this photo, making her the character we don't relate to.

High Angle Shot + Editing

A high angle shot makes the audiance feel more dominant, but the prop that is included in this film cancels out what the audiance might be feeling, as they start to wonder why the floor sign is moving. I used editing to make it look like its going at a speed, and this adds effect as it attracts the audiance to the scene that is going on in front of them. Not being able to see Molly's facial expression makes the audiance eager to find how she is looking, and how she is feeling, because the floor sign could symbolise anger. The empty room around her looks small because Molly is closer to the camera, and it makes her the center of attention, also the use of colours that she is wearing makes her more interesting than the dull plain colours of the surrounding area.

Close Up

A close- up of Alice's hand as she turns on the tap is effective as the water trails off of the screen, focusing on the hand that is turning it. This is a simple mundane action that is used in a unique way by camera shots, and I need to include something similar to this in my opening two minutes to make the clip more intereing apart from a mid shot of everything. It also shows my understanding of camera movements and the characters engaging with their surroundings.

Wide Shot

A wide shot shows the character whole with the surroundings, and this is needed in my opening two minutes so I can show the audiance where the camera is at that time. This way the audiance can follow how one scene was taken to the other scene, and this way it makes it more beliveable to how they get to each area. This clip is of Alice kneeling against the door, this is so u can see the cleaning area that surrounds her. e can see her engaging with her phone, which makes the audiance relate as most of the audiance contain a phone, and it makes the audiance feel as if they are the only ones let in on the secret that she isn't doing her job.

I think these shots need to be included in my opening two minutes as it shows my understanding of the 180 degree rule, and how to link one location to the other in my scene. It also allowed me to experiment with how the actors, Molly and Alice, link in with the environment around them and how I can use this to my advantage in making my film.

Props

Keys

Keys will be one of my props to use as it is a prop that can link one scene to another when it enters and exits from one room to another. This then makes the audiance feel like they are watching something more realistic instead of them feeling like they are watching something on a screen. These keys are to the private school to take you from one film to another, and the lock would make the audiance curious to what is on the other side to each door.

Door Handle

The door handle is another prop I am including as it is what I can use a camera shot to zoom in on, and can create the same atmosphere as the key, only this one would work well in a horror cliches as the door creaks. When the door creaks you could be introduced to the objectivity of fear, which would be either the person opening the door or the person inside the room.
Action cliches would also work with this prop as you can have the scene with the man with a gun, which would be pointed at the person either inside or going inside the room. This is why I included this prop, as it works best with the ideas I am trying to create.

Analysing these props has helped me in thinking about the surrounding area in more detail, and getting the simplest things into the film recognised. This way I can have more ideas going into my blog and it will make it more interesting when brought onto my film.

Location Pictures - Private School

Small Room Window

I chose to include this small room in my location pictures because it can be suited for horror and action cliches, being stuck in a small place, hididng from someone. I decided to take a picture of the door because an actor could be looking through, and I can experiment with different camera shots for this.

Corridor

The corridor is a place where I can visualise a chase scene, one actor chasing another. This relates more to the action theme I was going for, and it might be fun to experiment with. What can also happen in this clip could be  scene where two actors simply converse, this makes me think of ashes to ashes where they use words to keep the audiance entertained while the camera is just tracking them.

Media Room

The media room is an important part to me, as it is enclosed. I don't know what I can visualise in this area yet, but I feel that it could be a big scene. This is because of the emptyness of it, when I think action, I think of this scene that would include something of a hostage claim. It could be the scene that changes the entire plot of the film from my opening two minutes, but it is an idea I am thinking about.

Media Room - Side View

The side view shows how the media room looks like from the other side of the room, where it is identical. I think the arrangement of the seats would help me when making as in editing they would be in the same places, and it would look more realistic when edited.

Toilet

The toilet is a good place for a horror cliches, as you can include the mirror as a prop and use an over the shoulder shot to see someone behind. This can also be included in an action, as it can create a tense atmosphere for a scene e.g. fight scene. I know this is a scene I can recreate at any time, that is why it might work for me to use.

This location is one area i am including, but I will take pictures of other locations that might be better to use for my film, as this is just an oepning to what I might consider doing.

Actors

Molly Venn

Age: 16

Alice Venn

Age: 16

Molly and Alice are included in my film at this stage, and I think it would be best if we do the clip in the place that we work, a private school at night. This is because when we work it is at 7 in the evening, and in winter, the time of year we are in it is pitch black. This can add atmosphere to my opening two minutes if I created my clip here, and they will be around to be included in my clip at any time. I also think this would be a good idea because we work 5 days a week, giving me time to film these clips and refilm if there is a part that isnt correct, and then I will have more time to edit.
Before I decide completely on this place to be my choice of location, I am going to go to other areas and see if there is a better place to film my clip, and whether it will look better than the school scenery. This is because I think the scene I have chosen links more to horror, with its creepy atmosphere, but when deciding what I am filming this might fit in for my location.

Institution Research

Paramount Pictures

Paramount Pictures is the type of institution company that realeses films for all ages, family films. They have released horror films, one example so far in cinema's is Paranormal Activity, which is a sequel and onto its third film. Paranormal activity is a very successful company that have released films that are extremely successful, one of which was Titanic, the second best selling film in the world today. This is a good thing to research so I can know who would tend to buy my film if I created it, and with the type of films that are made (e.g. children, adults, romace ect.) I dont think this company would buy my film.

Universal

Universal studios have created films such as Jurassic Park, which is a universally known name in the film industry. This type of style follows when they also help create King Kong, which is based on a link between the realism to the editing. This is helpful when understanding how and who there style of films should be made for, and Universal is more sci-fi family films. They include action, but the main Institution for that is 20th Century Fox

20th Century Fox

20th Century fox is the company that I think would be who would consider buying my type of film, as the films that have been made from them tend to be action. One example of a film that makes this company extremely successful is Avatar, which beat Titanic in the best selling film in the world. This immediatly puts the Institution on the map for best international films, and Avatar resembles a lot of action mixed with sci- fi, but films such as 'In Time' that has just been made and released in cinemas are action films that have been made successful because of the Institution that linked them. This is why I would like to include my film to the list of films created, as it would fit with the style of films they create.

This has been helpful in knowing what type of films to analyse later, and how I will go about creating my own film. I think this has helped me realise the wide variety of styles each genre has, and now I know which path to send mine down, I think I should be creating a more energetic film.

Mood Board Prezi

I decided to create a mood board that would help me when thinking of a plot for my opening two minutes, I eventually decided on deciding because of this Prezi that action is the best way for me to go on my opening two minutes. I will refer to this as I continue with my research and planning.

Opening Credits

Twilight

I decided to analyse the opening titles to twilight, as the use of font and editing makes this name title stand out compared to other films that are releasing themselves into the video industry. The title is effective in this film as it immediatly catches the audiance in, with the use of lighting. Making the title bright and using it effectively to make it look like light coming through the dark sky surrounding the screen sets the theme of the entire film, interpreting this as the light of the gloom that surrounds us at the start of this film. The use of font is bright and clear on the screen, taking up the entire room. This is so the audiance clearly see the name of the film and it sets an understanding that the film is about to start. Using elegant looping on the letter 'G' makes it more interesting to look at, instead of just settling it as normal font like Ariel, which would be considered too common, therefore the audiance wouldn't bother to look. Using tis type of font also interprets that this again shows the seeting of the film, as the font gives us the view that it is a fantasy like film, which is later found out to be true as it is involved around vampires. The use of font also establishes that this film is more feminine, as the looping wouldn't be included in a masculine action film or a horror, it doesn't fit in aesthetics or characteristics. This is for more love films and romance cliches, which I am not doing in my opening two minute clip, so I have analysed this so I can know what I need to avoid.

Snatch

I chose to analyse Snatch oepning titles next to see the difference between a female film and a masculine film for action films. We know it is action by the bold lettering, with the font being plain and solid. The reason why we can interpret this as a masculine film is because the Titles are less important to males, as they want the action to start straight away. Underlining it attracts attention to the viewers, making sure they watch the screen, and it also adds exitement to the audiance as its purpose is to show the film is about to start, which it does so successfully. The writing is white to contrat against the diamond, which is done so the audiance feel this is more interesting than the expensive prop used behind it. This is effective in making the audiance know that this is an action film, because the title is bold just like the male cliche suggests they should feel. I like the idea of this title as well, and that is why I think an action is more interesting to me to do for my opening two minutes.

I think analysing these titles has helped me decide what is the best choice of font to use, and know I know when I make an action film how to do my font and title, as it is more important than I first thought. I now know that my title is key to making the audiance know that this is the genre, it shows off the films genre.

Massive Attack - Angel

I was listening to this song and I thought that this would be a good backing track if I decided to make an action genre, but I found it interesting as this could also be used in horror. The beat is slow but effective as it is dark and intense, this is why I thought it would be a good song to use. This makes me think of slow motion films that usually end up with action that is violent and brutal.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/odLERTf16GQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I chose this music also because it is a good example of the type of music that keeps the audiance on edge, and would silence them in a cinema. This is because the type of music is very atmospheric and would work well in a scene where the audiance need to take seriously. The name of the song 'Demon Days' could give me a plot for a horror or action film I could create, I think horror would work best in this however as it is very dark in its use of instruements and choir. It is one of the reasons why I think horror is a better use of this song, as in horror genres I have put on my mindjet that one of the cliches is priests and nuns being misinterpreted as bad, and this song contains a church choir singing. This is why I have decided to look closely, as it would work best for that genre. I have analysed the Gorillaz once before, where they include horror and action cliches, so this could work for a mix of these genres.

I think analysing these songs are good for me to understand how to use music to show what genre or emotion should be felt, so I will think closely when I come to create each scene and what I will use.

Film Certificate Research

For Horror films the age restriction logo isn't for people at ages under 18. This is because of explicit content that horror films contain, which means that if I created this genre for my opening two minutes this is the certificate that would need to be included. By explicit content, that could mean blood and gruesome scenes that are disturbing to some audiances, and would frighten younger ages. For horror films, the certificate attracts the audiance, this is because an 18 film would attract the older audiances to the film because it guarantees explicit content which younger people couldn't watch. It is considered a good thing in the film industry for horror, and guarantees the audiance will watch it. The age restriction can also mean that the film contains language which younger children couldn't hear, which again attracts the audiance at which it is aimed for. What the eighteen age limit logo mainly refers to is sexual content, which can be more explicit than of the sexual content of a fifteen, compared to a twelve certificate which will contain no sexual content. This is what I will use for my film if it is a horror.

A certificate for fifteen year olds are usually family films, as they can contain few explicit content and some rude language. This is less effective than an eighteen on the older audiances as it can show the lack of sexual content or gore, which would be guaranteed in an eighteen film. This is used mainly for action cliches as it can be used for violence in a film with few disturbing scenes but it can reinforce the idea of abuse to the audiance. This is why it is not used for younger ages of twelve, as this age and below would reinforce and copy the actions that are on the screen. The fifteen certificate can be used for most teenage films or family films, this way it the most used certificate in attracting audiances.

The certificate twelve is the certificate that is used for family films as well as certificate fifteen, but it can be watched by younger ages, therefore it contains no language or explicit content. The action films are again included in this certificate, but it means no rude language or blood or gore can be included at all. This means if I chose to make a horror film this certificate wouldn't be appropriate because it wouldn't attract the audiance. This is because the audiance would repel by the lack or gore or explicit content which the certificate eighteen guarantees, and would become an unsuccessful film. A genre that would work best for this certificate is romace film, as it doesn't have to contain any explicit content and wouldn't reinforce young ages in a bad way.

I think looking at these certificates will help me understand when choosing my genre which one will need to be taken into account when I create my opening two minutes, and whether it should contain rude language or blood and gore. The genre I know I won't be making is a romance, as it means that the certificate will be under the Twelve or over, and it isn't a genre I enjoy doing. Horror would be hard to create in the opening two minutes, but action can be done. I think horror would include more for me to experiment with however, which is why I am still trying to decide which one I will choose.

Film Ideas Brainstorm

For my own film idea, I think I am deciding against action or horror for my genre. I have analysed different cliches and I wasn't interested in romance, this is because I don't believe there is anything to play around with in this cliche with camera shots and editing. One of the clips I was interested in the most was my Gorillaz video. I like this as I have a passion for music and I would like to be able to show this in my film. The Gorillaz are also my favourite music group, and the reason why I think this would link well to my blog is because all their videos are animatics, with the cartoons that they choose. I think I can use this as inspiration when creating my own animatic and link the cliches that are used.

The reason why I am interested in horror cliches is because of the clip that I had created with Jasmine and Bekky for my mix of clips for 'What Are You Doing Here?'. My favourite clip from this was the bathroom clip from which we used the cliche of the person behind the mirror, which I used special effects to make it more dark.
I had analysed a clip from 'Shaun of the Dead' which was a mix of horror and comedy. I liked this clip as it was using saracsm to the idea of horror cliches, which linked it to action. The Gorillaz video I used to do this as well was linked to horror in the rural setting, which I liked the idea of. I think I might link both of these genres together and create a comedy of action or horror. I think more research will further help me understand which one I will choose.

Opening Scene Ideas for my film

I have included the different cliches that are expected in each genre of film, and I can refer back to this to see which film would interest me most. I can also decide whether I would like to link different genres together to create a mix of both. I have included music ideas and camera shots that would mainly be used as well. I think this is will help me if I choose to use one of these genres for my opening two minutes and saves me researching later.

Camera Work - Editing

To test how to use the camera in different angles we used editing to put together a short scene where the camera changes angles according to the 180 degree rule. In order to do this we had to film the clip more than once, each time in different angles according to what works best for the plot of the story. Once we had put together the different angles of the video we used the computer to edit each clip so it works together and creates a running through video. The camera shots we use are the mid shot, which is used when the characters are in conversation. This is effective in seeing the facial expressions they show. We use mid shot in different ways, one being the over the shoulder shot, this is from both halves of the conversation so we can see each of their expressions. We use close up of the face to see facial expressions, and we zoom out into a mid shot again. This is done by filming two seperate clips and making sure we put them together in a way that works best. We also have to make sure that the camera work doesn't ruin the continuity of the performance, so we had to make sure that in editing we got the character catching the jumper before it falls, this way it makes sense when she holds the jumper and throws it onto the ground, we do this in a close up as it hits the floor.

I like the clip we created for this as we got to experiment with how the camera shows different shots, and how the continuity of the scene has to stay the same in order for the audiance to believe that they are watching a realistic show. I think using this type of style will help me in my opening two minutes when it comes to camera work. I think our clip was realistic and the editing works well in the mix of shots.

Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging

I chose this genre as it is a mix so it is suitable for the teenage audiance, comedy mixed with the stereotypical views of the teenage ages which is what the entire film is based on. It shows the representations of the teenage girls lives according to the media, and they use language for teenage girls the same ages to relate to the characters, keeping them entertained. I think this is a good film to analyse as it focuses more on the stereotypical views of teenagers and how this one character, Georgia, is portrayed compared to the other characters in this film.
The camera shot in the first clip is a two shot, this is to show both characters and be involved in the conversation that is ppening between them. The costume that she wears is to add humour to the situation that is going on that is shown in the diegetic conversation of the characters interacting. The use of slang language that the teenage girl uses connects the target audiance and adds humour at the over exagerration of the language. The sound effects that is used when she hits the pipe again proves the over exagerration of the teenage ideas. To see the full costume there is a wide shot of the surroundings and the olive costume she is wearing.
The camera immediatly jumps to the next clip, which is done so by the diegetic dialogue that is used. She says 'I have to make an entrance', to which you next see the clip of when she is entering. This adds humour as the rest of the people in this party are dressed more appropriatly than her.
The cliched bully of teenage films makes herself known as she makes the entire area of people around her laugh at this character, which makes the audiance feel sympathy for her. When she sees her friends she starts to charge over to them, from then on she confronts them and their ideas for costumes. This is when the audiance start to see that she in fact is different to the other girls who are just trying to fit in.
The opening two minutes end with a tracking shot of her running through the different surroundings to get home, after she has been embarrased. This is stereotypical in how the media portrays teengage girls behaviour, and the audiance it is aimed for see how the media sees them. This is how the audiance feel connected to this character. The use of text over the action that is happening is there as teenage girls haven't got the attention span to see these before a film starts, which is how it would be in an adult film.

This type of film doesn't interest me as much as grown up adult films as it doesn't have much ideas going into it, and I don't think I would consider this for my opening two minutes. I will consider instead more adult comedy if I chose this genre, like Shaun of the Dead.

Shaun of the Dead

Shaun of the Dead is a comedy of the horror film 'Dawn of the Dead' which I analysed for cliches. This makes fun of the cliches thatmost horror films have, by using comments and acting to entertain the audiance instead of scare them. I like this film as they clearly recognise the cliches and make fun of them in a new way using the effects of light, sound and special effects. I did the scene when the zombies start to get inside the house, as the cliches are all in this and it shows the comedy they use to twist the plot of the story.

It starts of with a scene of being trapped in a dark, scary room. The use of mise-en-scene is used effectively as the light effect that is used is the natural light. The camera is in two shots of each of the characters doing the same cliche of what happens in horror. The comforting of the shoulder. This tells the audiance that they are about to face the zombies coming in the pub, which is where this scene is set in. The pub setting is the comedy behind this horror genre, as most people stay hidden in areas other than having a beer which is why these characters go to the Winchester. This keeps the audiances attention and wait for the next cliche that is about to happen.

The next cliche occurs when a zombie jumps up from behind, the objectivity of fear cliche. The lack of music and the over exaggeration of acting is what makes this more of a comedy, rather something to laugh at the characters at for being scared of it. It is a zombie, and the humour behind it is that the characters turn their attention away from the objectivity of fear to the jukebox, which starts playing quenn's 'don't stop me now'. It is funny to assume you would turn your attention away from the objectivity of fear when in all horror cliches it is stereotypical to assume they stay transfixed to their fear.

The cheesy scenes that are considered when doing this clip are used, the camera focuses on the gun which gives the characters an idea. The comedic event occurs as the scary scene is frozen to fight over the characters long argument that this gun is real and fires real bullets. This makes the audaince feel more comfortable in this scene as it shows that this clip isn't really meant to portray fear. It also makes the audiance question whether the gun does fire real bullets, which could be a weapon to attack.
What makes the audiance feel more comfortable in this scene is the everyday banter on how to kill a zombie. This adds humour as the talk is casual at the face of danger. One of the characters jumps over the pool table, which could be portrayed as an action cliche. This again adds humour however as it isn't graceful. This is a comedy cliche in itself. The sound effects that are used for the small things e.g. in this clip catching a snooker cue, over exaggerates the use of sound effects that horror would use.

As the characters try unsuccessfully to kill the zombie the camera pans around them as they progress to hit him with the snooker cue. This is effective as you get to see each characters expression.
To get to the fuses with this one character, the camera uses a tracking shot to follow him into another room. This allows the audiance to see another area of what is going on outside, as you see the zombies silhouetted by the light outside from the other side of the door, which can be seen as you would by the character. The hands of the zombies are seen, this is because it is a cliche of horror which they sucessfully represent. There is also jumped clips of the outside of the pub, where a high angle shot is used to see the zombies below, this makes the audiance feel as if they aren't actually in this particualr area, just getting a view of what the characters are about to face. This makes the audiance feel more powerful as they know the vast amount that are outside.

The use of props is effective when the dart misses the zombie and hits the character in the head. The way we get to see this is a tracking shot of this prop as it flies through the air, it is made more exiting by the sound effects. When it hits the character he reacts by screaming, which plays on the audiances humour instead of feeling the opposite, which is how horror would portray this.

The clip is finished by the gun shooting off into a glass bottle. This proves the argument that the characters have been having, but one character is still arrogant about another argument that they had been having, again directing the audiance of course of the storyline which has been happening. This is effective in continuing the comedy theme and sarcasm of the origional film.

I personally like this clip as I enjoy watching comedy's, and I like how they use camera shots and lighting in a way that can be saracastic. This has made the film more funny as it is scary by the use of language and humor and sound effects. I might do thisd for my final piece, as the use of loud sound effects makes this more enjoyable and entertaining to engage the viewer. I might consider choosing a horror film and changing the plot to make it into a comedy as well, to show my understanding of how they did it.

What Are You Doing Here? Video Clip Created.

I had done a test to practice the use of camera shots, and how to compose a film together. I had used different effects to make this piece more believable in its aesthetcis for the genre I tried to create. I was firstly told to create three different clips and scenes of different genre's in order to put together and make this film, and I did this in three different areas to represent different ideas. The first clip I created was to represent a teenage cliche, and make the scene more happy to the viewers. This is shown by the acting and the mutual relashionship that is shown by the connotation that you can hear in the diegetic sound of our voices. I decided to use an old movie effect to make this scene as I was trying to represent and make the viewer interpret that this clip wasn't from present time, and send the viewer back to an easier time. I did this as I thought it would be cliched as this is genuinly what chick flicks contain. I had decided to use a high angle panning shot, the panning shot was so the audiance can see Bekky move along the screen and where she is headed, and I used the high angle shot to make it seem distant, and therefore makes the audiance distant to the scene. I think I was successful in the idea of the shots and views, but what I struggled and found unsuccessful was how to get the message across to viewers that this is first clip was in a different time era. This could help me improve for the opening two minutes I am going to create. I used the field stairs as a setting as it is stereotypical for teenagers to be around in an empty place to be around, which makes the scene more believable.
I did the next clip in a mid shot to follow Jasmine's movements as she walks to the bathroom sink. The use of mise-en-scene is used to interpret to the viewer that this is a horror film, as I used the cliched idea of the setting that the bathroom is a vulnerable place to be and the audiance feel more uncomfortable at the scene they are set in. The first part of the clip is zoomed in, and this is so you can see the facial expession that are used, and the audiance can connect to how she is feeling. The camera follows and pans her as she makes her way to the the sink, and this lets the reader take in the scene around her. The audiance see a quick shot of the objectivity of fear, which is effective as the audiance feel more involved in the film as they know what is about to happen before they do. This also links in with the cliched idea of horror films. This links to the past clip as I used the effect of the page turning to link one scene to another, which is what I tried to use as an effect to see where one clip ends and the other begins. I tried to make this an understanding to the viewer that the clip is back to the present time by the page turning to try and represent the first clip as a story to where it ends, and that the next clip is a new chapter. I don't think this is successful as it doesn't bring it across that its a time differenciated clip, which is what I need to do by, for example, text or non-diegetic dialogue next time. I chose a black and white effect for this clip as it adds more intensity to the clip, and the audiance can understand this as being atmospheric. The effect of the mirror is that it adds cliche to the horror genre as it it used to show the objectivity of fear behind the mirror. This would be effective as it shows I have understood the idea of horror and how it should be presented. The simple use of the zooming in of the wash basin adds a diversion to the mirror for a short time in order to make the objectivity of fear appear in the background. As they appear in the background it is cliched that they would be there, but it is also still apprehensive to the viewer. I think I was successful with the background use in the clip and the light effects which cover the face, but I think it needed more planning to make it more effective.

The last shot was made by using a bright light to go from one scene to another, this was so I could show that the last scene linked with the scene that is happening at this time, the character I play is the objectivity of fear they are hiding from, but from this scene it was meant to be interpreted as the villian, this means that it merged from horror to action. I think that I did succeed in this as they both can mix in their cliche's, and that this works well to keep the viewer concentrated to the clip. I used a low angle shot to show the importance of the character as she runs to the corner of the camera, and this makes the viewer completely identify with the clip. I used a panning shot next to show the area to which the camera is looking at, which is nothingness. This is effective as it can represent horro and action, and it links well with the past clip. The use of mise-en-scene in the empty areas is effective as it makes the viewer eager to find what it is there hiding from, revealing the darkest desires of the viewer as they anticipate the character that is feared of the objectivity of fear to be hurt. This was what we considered as we filmed, and I think this needs more input and thought out ways of showing this in order to represent this propaly in the clip. The camera pans quickly back to show Jasmine jumping out at Bekky, who uses the phrase that is included in all the clips. This was the one phrase we could say in each of our clips, to see how we could change the effectiveness of each way of saying this. This was effective as it made the audiance qustion what they are hiding from. To end the clip I again used light effects, this time I decided to use a darkness at the end to make the audiance question how the scene would have played out if continued. I think this was effective as it means that it can show that the film would have continued if not for the limited clips, which is why I didn't include credits. I thought this out and I think it works well into making the audiance understand that that wasn't the finishing clip of the film if made.

I think this was a successful start to the clips as me, Jasmine and Bekky worked together to form a group of clips that can be easily seen and understood to what genre they were meant to be, and the thought was inside the clips but they couldn't be fully represented. I think to improve in my own two minute piece I need to present and use dialogue to clearly state what is happening in each of the scenes, then this could work better. The use of effects however makes this clip more insightful to how the audiance should be feeling, and the order of the clips has been thought out to create a short film. This is what I think I have succeeded on.

Troll Scene - Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone

Harry Potter is a successful american film and that is why I chose to do this for my work, as it showed I was looking at more common films that the rest of the audiance watch. The audiance ranges from all ages and is mainly considered a family film, as the bright colours and characters entertain young children but also the language that is used entertains teenagers to adults as it is more grown up as they grew. The toilet troll scene was the scene I decided to use as it shows the mix of different graphical uses such as the creation of the character to the way editing has been used to show the use of magic. Lighting, Mise-en-scene, sound effects and camera angles are all used in an effective way to show this troll is dangerous, and that this scene is something to be scared of.
Mood music has been used to make the viewer aknowledge that there is something to be feared, this is done by the music growing louder as the scene continues. This makes the viewer understand the closeness of the objectivity of fear to the character.
The camera pans from a high shot from the bottom of the trolls feet up to his face, which ends in a low shot. This makes the viewer engage the size of this troll compared to the other characters and immediatly makes the audiance feel vulnerable in his presence. The use of editing on his size is effective for all ages as they can immediatly understand the way they should be feeling in this situation. The use of natural light is used when it came to the thunder in the background, as the bad weather makes the view of the troll more fearsome in the silhouette of the light. Young ages are able to understand the fear with the denotation on Hermoine's face, the cliched girl who needs to be saved in action films. To see the difference in height between Hermoine and the troll adds the effect of how this seen is portrayed in a wide shot, makes the viewer engage to how she is going to be saved.
The use of Mise-en-scene is used to portray a cliche that is typically used in horror films, the vulnerable scene of the bathroom. This is effective as it makes the viewer vulnerable to how they would feel in the same situation. A high shot on Hermoine's face adds the fear for her and shows her expressions more clearly, and how vulnerable she would be feeling. The use of the club is stereotypical to how the audiance thinks of trolls, and the use of this when smashing the toilets is effective in portraying the genre of the action film, it raises awareness to the audiance.
Other than being with that they are children, the stereotypical men are here to save the female, just like an action film cliche. This adds effect even though the audiance does recognise that the boys will get there in time. The low angle shot adds effect when the boards come flying towards the camera, as it makes the audiance react the way they would towards an object flying at them.

I think that this film is good for all ages as it adds expressions for them to understand, and the use of graphics and editing makes this more interesting for children with short attention spans. I think I will consider this genre for my opening two minutes as action is interesting to watch, and it is interesting to see the difference between this and the Gorillaz video, seeing as they had similar actions and consequences. I like how the use of the same effects can create completely different videos.

Gorillaz Stylo Music Video

I chose to do a music video to look at the similarity's between how music videos have followed the path of creating video's in their work to make their songs more appealing to audiances. Music videos are just as important as films as they have to tell a story just as films do in order to make sense. I chose this particular video of Gorillaz 'Stylo' as it has a story beneath it to attract the viewers attention and it has many different styles and techniques in order to bring out the best of it. I chose this song also as it is a personal favourite of mine when it comes to music, and it would be something that I could consider exploring when doing my own video.
First, comes the music. This is important to bring around the genre of the fact that this is a music video, and not just any old clip. The music is what sells the video so it is vital to the clip. As the music is important to the video it makes the music diegetic to the viewer as the characters sing along to this film. To introduce to the video there is a tracking shot at a high angle of the road, which starts to turn upwards into a low angle shot which allows you to see the car that is speeding towards the viewer. This is effective as it makes the viewer feel vulnerable in the presence of the car as it looks dangerous in the reflection of the natural light that is shown on it. The mise-en-scene at the moment shows that this video might have been inspired by horror cliches, as the setting that is seen throughout the video is an empty rural setting where nobody but the ignorant driver is in view. This is effective as the viewer unrecognisably engages to the empty setting as something to be feared and therefore keeps them watching. The camera shot is still low as the car speeds towards the camera into a zoom, where you can see the effects of smoke coming out of the spoiler. This is effective as it further encourages the view that the car is going fast, and this could make the viewer again relate to the horror theme as it makes them question why they are going fast on the empty road. Are they being cliched because of the ignorance that makes the viewer want to kill them? Or is it a cliched chase scene?
The camera moves to focus on the lighting of the spotlights, which is changed by effects to move on to the next scene of a speaker. This is effective as it doesn't leave the viewer confused to how the video just jumps from one scene to another. In a mid shot the camera jumps from the speaker to a fat cop, which is usually cliched in action films. This attracts the reader as it makes them change their point of view to what story this is going to continue and how they should interpret this. The fat cop is eating dohnuts on the side of the road and this adds humour to the video and makes the viewer feel involved with the story as they know a car is heading his way in fast speed. The camera continues to one clip to another, using sound effects from the car to link one scene to another together. The cars revving engine noises that are used are crucial to making it sound realistic that the car is going fast, it is also effective to make the viewer watch and eager to watching more. The clips with the cop are silent at the moment at the beggining to contrast the peace he feels in at that time that nothing is going to happen. Which also makes the viewer feel important to this character. They will know more than he does.
As the car drives past the scene is put into a wide shot so you can see the fat cops expression, which turns to shock as the noise of the car is brought louder to this scene. Both of these put together are effective as it brings out the importance of this car and it viewed as going fast which attracts the viewer to watch on. As the cop sees this car he hurries to get into his own car, and this is a particularly good as it enhances the idea of this short clip to be an action cliche. It continues to make the viewer watch on as they wait impatiently for the chase scene to happen. The shots pans from the cop in the view of the fasts cars backview mirror, this makes the viewer feel involved with the action that is going on as they are put in the shoes of the drivers in this fast car. The use of acting makes this more humourous as you see the fat cop slide across the car which is typically seen in action films for the hero to do in this situation. The viewer knows that the cop isn't going to handle the situation, as he is seen stereotypically because of his size to give up which is how the reader interprets this, but also because of the rapid pace at which the cop dissapears from the wide shot in the view of the rear view mirror.
The camera jumps immediatly to a mid shot of the driver, who is graphically created. This is what viewers wait to see as he is one of the creatures made for the group which the music is created. It makes the viewer feel more connected and understand a bit more about the plot of the film. Graphically created images shows the use of editing, which is crucial for the viewers to understand who each character is, and is effective as they are made to look like they are within the scene. The camera pans to the left and zooms in to see the other characters in view, again adding awareness to the viewer to where each character stands. The camera once again jumps to the front view of the car, and this is done so you can view the text, which is the name of the song. This is effective as the keeps the audiance informed to what song it is. The camera stays still in a low shot so the car can come past, this helps the viewer continue to know that the car is going at a fast speed. The bullet holes that are on the car in clear view as it drives past keeps the viewers entertained idea that a chase scene is about to happen, and makes the audiance aware of the use of props that is going to be used. Guns are stereotypical of action scenes, and the more stereotypical ideas come into play the more the viewer starts to realise that this is an action clip.
The chase scene begins to occur when the siren is heard on the screen but can't be seen, and the noise of the siren grows so the viewer can interpret that the car is getting closer, this engages the reader as they want to know how this will end.
The viewer gets what they wait for as one of the characters gets the gun and shoots the lights on the cops car, which makes him veer off the edge of the road. This is effective as it attracts the audiance who are waiting for the car chase, preferably males. This is also effective as it makes the viewer identify that the car that is still driving more dominent and should be played closer attention to.
As the car is driving it gets a cliched shot of the car going through the billboard, which is effective in aesthetics and makes the viewer want to be in the position they are in for the thrill. A low shot is used to add effectiveness to the height of the car as it is flying, and the crash adds to the effect and entertainment of the billboard.

I think that this is a good music video to analyse as it links with the concepts of cliche for horror and action, even though it is clearly identified as an action. I like the way they create a story to make a link with music, and that I might consider creating my own small clip to a music video, this would be effective as it isn't done a lot of times. I like this as it is my favourite band and video which is why I chose to analyse it, and I will consider doing something similar for my opening two minutes.
